Zelensky reveals willingness of Trump to give Ukraine security assurances
“There must be truly reliable security guarantees. By the way, today President Trump spoke about his support for this and America's readiness to participate,” Zelenskyy stated during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.
The briefing followed a video conference that included Zelenskyy, Trump, Merz, and other European leaders, during which they reportedly agreed on five shared principles for ending the war in Ukraine, ahead of Friday’s planned meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Zelenskyy voiced hope that the summit would prioritize an immediate ceasefire and stressed that discussions about Ukraine’s territorial integrity must consider “our state, our people, the will of the state, the will of our people, and the Constitution of Ukraine.” Regarding the eastern Donbas region, he emphasized that his stance remains “unchanged” because it is anchored in the Constitution.
“As long as the Constitution of the state remains unchanged, the position of the guarantor of this Constitution cannot change,” he added.
He further argued that sanctions should be intensified if Russia refuses a ceasefire in Alaska, claiming that Putin is “bluffing” when he suggests that existing sanctions are ineffective. “He is trying to put pressure on all fronts of the Ukrainian front ahead of the meeting in Alaska. Russia is trying to portray itself as capable of occupying the whole of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy asserted.
The Ukrainian leader also underlined the importance of preparing for a potential trilateral meeting with both his US and Russian counterparts. He mentioned that Trump proposed staying in contact after the Alaska summit to determine their “next steps” following the discussions.
