PSG Clinches UEFA Super Cup on Penalties Over Tottenham
(MENAFN) Paris Saint-Germain clinched the UEFA Super Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday after rallying from two goals down.
Spurs, fresh off their Europa League triumph, appeared poised for victory with a 2-0 lead in the final five minutes of regular time. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute when his effort followed a save by PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Joao Palhinha’s shot. Cristian Romero doubled Spurs' advantage just after halftime, heading in a free-kick delivery in the 48th minute.
PSG thought they had reduced the deficit in the 67th minute when Bradley Barcola found the net from close range, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review flagged him offside.
The Champions League holders mounted a stunning comeback in the dying minutes. Substitute Lee Kang-in brought PSG back into contention with a powerful strike in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos netted the equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Vitinha missed PSG’s opening attempt. However, Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee, and Nuno Mendes successfully converted their penalties. Spurs' Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro scored for their side, but Van de Ven’s attempt was saved and Mathys Tel missed.
With the win, PSG became the 26th team to lift the UEFA Super Cup, and notably, the first French club to do so. Real Madrid holds the record for most Super Cup victories, with six titles, following their 2-0 win over Atalanta in 2024. AC Milan and Barcelona trail with five each.
