Zelensky Downplays US, Russia Summit Impact
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has made it clear that the future of Ukraine cannot be decided by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their anticipated summit in Alaska unless Kiev is involved in the discussions.
Zelensky emphasized to reporters that, despite the high expectations surrounding the meeting, both leaders' talks would not hold the power to determine Ukraine's fate without Ukraine's consent.
Earlier, Zelensky had referred to the summit as a “personal victory” for Putin but sought to minimize its potential impact on Ukraine.
Both Moscow and Washington have stated that the summit in Anchorage would primarily focus on seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
President Trump has suggested that one of the topics could include discussions on a potential land swap between Russia and Ukraine.
However, Zelensky insisted that while such talks are significant at the leadership level, “it is impossible to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine,” and that no agreement would be accepted without Kiev’s involvement.
While acknowledging the potential importance of direct discussions between Trump and Putin, Zelensky firmly stated, “But they cannot decide anything about Ukraine without us.”
He also mentioned the possibility of a future “trilateral meeting at the level of leaders,” though the timing of this gathering remains uncertain.
Moscow had previously indicated that direct talks with Zelensky might be possible, but only if meaningful diplomatic progress is achieved first.
Additionally, Russia has expressed concerns over Zelensky's ability to sign binding agreements, as his presidential term had expired the previous year.
