Investigators find evidence of Russia connected to cyberattack on US federal court system
The breach involved a multi-year effort to infiltrate the system, though the exact Russian entity responsible and whether other countries were involved remain unclear, as stated by reports.
Federal court officials recently alerted Justice Department staff and judges that hackers had accessed protected case files, according to an internal memo referenced in reporting. Initial attacks appeared to focus on criminal case files with international ties across at least eight federal district courts.
Authorities have not publicly identified the perpetrators or disclosed the full scope of compromised information, and Russia has not issued a statement.
The US Courts later confirmed that cyberattacks had targeted electronic case management systems containing sensitive documents. The agency stated it is “taking additional steps to strengthen protections for sensitive case documents.”
