Zelensky Rejects Territorial Swap in Donbass
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized that relinquishing land in Donbass would only enable Moscow to spark a new conflict in the future, potentially leading to a deeper invasion of Ukraine.
“We will not leave Donbass. We cannot do this. Everyone forgets the main issue – our territories are illegally occupied,” Zelensky asserted.
He warned that any territorial concessions would provide Russia with a “springboard” for future military operations against Ukraine.
He specifically pointed out that the notion of giving away around 9,000 square kilometers—roughly 30% of the Donetsk region—would effectively allow Moscow to launch a new wave of aggression in a few years.
Zelensky's comments come in response to statements made by US President Donald Trump earlier this week.
Trump suggested that any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine would likely involve territorial compromises from both nations.
“They’ve [Russia] occupied some very prime territory. We’re going to try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine,” Trump stated on Monday, signaling the ongoing complexity of the territorial dispute.
