Zelensky Allows Men Under 22 to Leave Ukraine

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has given orders for the authorities to permit men under the age of 22 to leave the country, signaling a significant shift in Kiev’s martial law policies.

These policies previously prohibited all Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 from traveling abroad due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Zelensky shared this development through a Telegram message on Tuesday, calling it a “positive” move.

He emphasized that this change would enable “many young Ukrainians to maintain ties” with their homeland and could allow them to return to Ukraine for educational purposes in the future.

He also instructed both the government and the military to streamline the border crossing process for these young Ukrainians, ensuring that those under 22 would no longer face travel restrictions.

The travel ban was initially imposed in February 2022, after the escalation of the war between Ukraine and Russia. Along with declaring martial law, Ukraine launched a large-scale mobilization effort.

However, the Ukrainian government has faced significant challenges with widespread attempts to evade the draft throughout the conflict.

Last year, Kiev adjusted its draft policy by lowering the upper age limit for conscription from 27 to 25, and further tightening mobilization rules.

This has led to violent confrontations between reluctant draftees and military officers, with numerous incidents captured on video and shared online.
