PSG achieves win in UEFA Super Cup

(MENAFN) Paris Saint-Germain staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Tottenham Hotspur in a penalty shootout to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday in Udine, Italy.

Tottenham, the Europa League champions, appeared to have the match under control, leading 2-0 with just five minutes remaining in regulation. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute after Lucas Chevalier saved Joao Palhinha’s shot, and Cristian Romero extended the lead with a header from a free-kick in the 48th minute.

PSG initially thought they had reduced the deficit in the 67th minute when Bradley Barcola scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

The Champions League winners mounted a late comeback. Substitute Lee Kang-in scored a powerful goal in the 85th minute, and Goncalo Ramos equalized in the fourth minute of stoppage time, forcing penalties.

In the shootout, PSG’s Vitinha missed the first attempt, but Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee, and Nuno Mendes converted the following four. For Tottenham, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro scored, while Van de Ven’s effort was saved and Mathys Tel missed.

Paris Saint-Germain became the 26th team to win the UEFA Super Cup and the first French club to lift the trophy. Real Madrid remains the competition’s most successful side, securing six titles after their 2-0 win over Atalanta in 2024, ahead of AC Milan and Barcelona with five each.
