UK, Iraq Sign New Pact

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom has finalized a new arrangement with Iraq to facilitate the return of individuals residing in the UK without proper legal status.

This agreement, signed on Wednesday, aligns with broader governmental measures aimed at reducing unauthorized channel crossings via small boats.

According to an official release from the British authorities, the agreement will create structured mechanisms to repatriate Iraqi citizens who do not possess the legal grounds to remain in the UK.

The initiative forms part of a comprehensive plan to discourage unlawful entries and reestablish control over the asylum system, while acknowledging Iraq’s ongoing efforts to assist with the reintegration of returnees.

The UK Home Office noted that the accord is designed to discourage future attempts to enter the country illegally by small boat, reinforcing the nation's long-term objective of a stable and functional immigration framework.

UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized the diplomatic significance of the new deal, stating: "This visit reinforces the strength of the UK-Iraq partnership and demonstrates our government’s commitment to serious diplomacy that delivers real results. As someone who served in Iraq, I understand first-hand the importance of building enduring relationships in the region, and the new agreement we have signed is a testament to the trust and cooperation we’ve built with our Iraqi counterparts."

Data shared by the UK government reveals that the number of Iraqi migrants arriving by small boats dropped to 1,900 in the twelve months leading to March 2025, a decrease from 2,600 during the previous year.

Officials attribute this decline to successful international collaboration and a holistic diplomatic strategy targeting unlawful migration.
