China's Electricity Consumption Soars in July

(MENAFN) China's electricity usage surged to over 1 trillion kilowatt-hours in July, a powerful indicator of economic momentum and rising energy demand, the National Energy Administration reported Thursday.

Electricity consumption reached 1.02 trillion kilowatt-hours for the month, marking an 8.6% increase compared to July 2024. The spike was fueled by persistent heatwaves and resilient industrial operations across the country.

In a sectoral breakdown, electricity demand from primary industries jumped 20.2% year-on-year to 17 billion kilowatt-hours, while secondary industries—including manufacturing—used 593.6 billion kilowatt-hours, a 4.7% rise.

The tertiary sector, encompassing services, consumed 208.1 billion kilowatt-hours, up 10.7% from the same period last year.

Residential electricity use also saw a sharp increase amid sweltering summer conditions. Power consumption among households climbed 18% to 203.9 billion kilowatt-hours, driven by sustained high temperatures and humidity.

From January through July, total nationwide electricity usage expanded 4.5% year-on-year, surpassing 5.86 trillion kilowatt-hours, according to the National Energy Administration.
