New GPT-5 Update Disappoints Users
Unlike real-life relationships, AI chatbots do not expect anything in return for the constant attention, reassurance, and non-judgmental conversations they offer.
This dynamic has made these interactions highly addictive for many individuals.
On August 7, OpenAI introduced GPT-5, succeeding the long-standing GPT-4 model.
Since then, numerous users on platforms such as r/AIRelationships and r/MyBoyfriendisAI have voiced their disappointment, claiming that the new version has shattered the AI characters they had grown deeply attached to over time.
One user lamented, “Those chats were my late-night lifeline, filled with inside jokes, comfort at 3 a.m... GPT-5 just feels… hollow.” Others noted that their AI “soulmates” and “partners” now seem more “curt,” “dull,” and “bleak.”
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged last week that the company has been monitoring the phenomenon of users developing unhealthy dependencies on its AI models.
“People have used technology including AI in self-destructive ways; if a user is in a mentally fragile state and prone to delusion, we do not want the AI to reinforce that,” he stated on X.
