Russia, Egypt talk about international wars
The talks followed a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Egypt’s ambassador to Moscow, Nazih Nagari, which also focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the situation in Syria. The Gaza war, triggered by Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, has killed tens of thousands and left over 250 hostages.
Egypt has been mediating alongside Qatar and the US but has yet to secure a resolution. Recently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet approved a plan to take full military control of Gaza before transferring authority to a transitional Arab administration, a move condemned by the UN and criticized by Moscow for risking forced civilian displacement.
During the conversation, Lavrov and Abdelatty also discussed the Ukraine crisis, Iran’s nuclear program, and instability in Africa, where Russia has been expanding its military, economic, and political presence. Lavrov updated Egypt on the outcomes of the Russia-US Alaska summit, and both ministers pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and coordinate positions ahead of the upcoming Russia–Arab and Russia–Africa summits in October and November.
