WHO Chief Demands Protection for Gaza Health Workers
"Extremely relived that our colleague, detained since 21 July in Gaza, was released this morning," Ghebreyesus declared on the social media platform X.
The incident traces back to July 21, when the Israeli military struck a building in Deir al Balah, Gaza, where WHO staff were based. Two WHO employees and two family members were taken into custody. While three detainees were subsequently freed, one staffer remained in detention until today.
"We once again call for protection of all WHO staff and personnel, and health and humanitarian workers," Ghebreyesus emphasized.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military operations have resulted in the deaths of over 62,600 Palestinians in Gaza, leaving the territory devastated and on the brink of famine.
Amid escalating tensions, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel faces a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice over its ongoing military campaign in the enclave.
