South Korea Pursues "Mature" China Relationship
(MENAFN) South Korea is aiming to advance a “mature” and pragmatic relationship with China while continuing to deepen its alliance with the United States, special envoys for South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said, according to media on Monday.
The diplomatic delegation, led by former National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday. During the talks, the South Korean side emphasized its commitment to a “strategic cooperative partnership” with Beijing, balancing national interests with existing security ties to Washington, the Foreign Ministry stated.
The envoys delivered a personal letter from President Lee to Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with an official invitation to attend the upcoming APEC summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.
Foreign Minister Wang marked the occasion by noting, “Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between” China and South Korea, according to a statement posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry website.
“The bilateral relationship is now at an important stage of improvement and development,” Wang said, reaffirming that Beijing “maintains stability and continuity in its policy towards” Seoul.
Wang further called on both governments to “adhere to the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, firmly uphold the friendship, expand common interests, and improve relations between the two peoples.”
China and South Korea officially established diplomatic relations in August 1992. Their bilateral trade reached $267.6 billion in 2024, underscoring the economic stakes as both sides navigate shifting geopolitical alignments.
