Dust Storm Sets Off Havoc in U.S. Phoenix
(MENAFN) A powerful dust storm wreaked havoc across parts of metro Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday evening, triggering severe thunderstorms, widespread damage, fallen trees, and power outages.
The dust storm, identified as a haboob by meteorologists, drastically reduced visibility to almost zero. Winds reaching 112.7 kilometers per hour (70 mph) tore through Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, destroying a connector bridge, according to media.
As the storm advanced into Maricopa County, the National Weather Service in Phoenix issued urgent warnings for both the dust storm and thunderstorms. Authorities warned of hazardous driving conditions, urging motorists to “pull aside (and) stay alive.”
At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, operations came to a standstill for an hour as crews conducted safety checks for roof damage and other issues. This caused delays of up to 30 minutes, spokesperson Gregory Roybal confirmed.
This intense haboob follows closely behind another dust storm that struck Nevada over the weekend, impacting attendees at the renowned Burning Man festival, approximately 193 kilometers (120 miles) from Reno.
