Suspected act of arson on mosque in UK is dealt with as hate crime
Emergency services responded to the blaze at the mosque on Phyllis Avenue just before midnight. Surveillance footage showed two people in dark clothing and masks approaching the front entrance, spraying an accelerant, and setting it alight before fleeing the scene.
Although fire crews quickly extinguished the flames and no injuries were reported, the mosque’s entrance and a nearby vehicle suffered significant damage.
Sussex Police have released images of two suspects they are seeking in connection with the incident. One was seen wearing a black jacket with a “Pre London” logo, and the other wore bright red gloves.
“This was an appalling and reckless attack which we know will have left many people feeling less safe,” said Detective Inspector Gavin Patch. “We are treating this as arson with intent to endanger life.”
Police urged anyone with information — no matter how minor it may seem — to come forward.
Superintendent Rachel Swinney said that police patrols around places of worship across Sussex have been increased to reassure communities.
“Sussex Police takes a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime, and there is no place for hate across the county,” she added.
In a statement, the mosque said while it was saddened by the attack, it was grateful no one was hurt.
“This hateful act does not represent our community or our town,” said a mosque spokesperson. “Peacehaven has always been a place of kindness, respect and mutual support, and we will continue to embody those values.”
The mosque urged the public to respond to hate with unity and compassion, calling for people to reject division.
The case has sparked wider concern over the safety of religious communities in the UK, especially amid rising tensions and incidents reported across the country.
