EU Commends Israel-Hamas Gaza Ceasefire Breakthrough
(MENAFN) EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Thursday praised the newly reached agreement between Israel and Hamas on the initial phase of a Gaza ceasefire as a "significant breakthrough."
“This is a major diplomatic accomplishment and a real chance to end a devastating war and release all the hostages,” Kallas declared via the US social media platform X.
She further emphasized the European Union’s commitment, stating the bloc “will do what it can to support its implementation.”
Her comments followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Israel and Hamas had endorsed the first stage of a US-brokered Gaza agreement.
The plan, unveiled on September 29, comprises 20 points including the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, Hamas’s disarmament, and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
Since October 2023, Israeli strikes have resulted in nearly 67,200 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, with women and children making up the majority.
The ongoing bombardment has rendered Gaza nearly unlivable, triggering severe famine and outbreaks of disease.
