Minister of Ecuadorian says leader survives killing attempt
The attack occurred as Noboa arrived in the south-central province of Canar, a region with a significant indigenous community, to inaugurate new water treatment and sewage infrastructure projects. His motorcade was reportedly surrounded by around 500 protesters. Footage released by the presidency and posted online shows demonstrators throwing stones at the convoy, shattering windows.
Manzano told reporters that the president’s car sustained significant damage, and police later discovered bullet marks on its exterior. The president was unharmed, and the minister confirmed she filed an official report of an “assassination attempt.”
The president’s office pledged accountability, stating on X: “Obeying orders to radicalize, they attacked a presidential motorcade carrying civilians. They attempted to forcibly prevent the delivery of a project intended to improve the lives of the community,” adding that the detained suspects would face charges of terrorism and attempted murder.
