Meta Tightens Instagram Rules to Match PG-13 Standards

(MENAFN) The U.S.-based Meta has unveiled major updates to Instagram's settings for teenage users, aiming to align their experience on the platform with content typical of a PG-13 film rating.

These adjustments, announced on Tuesday, automatically place users under 18 years of age into new default content restrictions designed for audiences aged 13 and older.

Importantly, teens won’t be able to exit these settings unless they have approval from a parent or guardian.

PG-13 is a film classification that suggests some material may not be suitable for viewers under 13. "This means that teens will see content on Instagram that's similar to what they'd see in a PG-13 movie," Meta clarified in a formal release.

In addition to these default protections, parents will have the option to implement even stricter content filters, providing them with more control over what their children can access.

These modifications broaden Meta's current guidelines, which already limit exposure to explicit or suggestive material and disturbing visuals.

Now, Instagram will also actively avoid showing or recommending posts that feature “strong language, certain risky stunts,” or content that promotes “potentially harmful behaviors.”

These steps reflect an expanded effort to protect younger users from inappropriate or dangerous material.

Acknowledging that some teens might attempt to bypass these measures by misrepresenting their age, Meta stated, "We'll use age prediction technology to place teens into certain content protections—even if they claim to be adults."

This suggests that artificial intelligence will play a role in reinforcing the new safety measures.
