China Fires Back at G7 Over Military Accusations
Media, citing Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, reported his forceful rebuke at a Beijing press conference. Lin declared that the G7 should "stop stirring up disputes, heightening tensions, and undermining regional peace under the pretext of maritime issues."
The Chinese official contested the fundamental premise of the Western alliance's scrutiny, asserting: "The situation in the East China Sea and South China Sea remains generally stable." He characterized the G7's position as fundamentally dishonest, contending that members "once again ignored facts, distorted right and wrong, and deliberately smeared China while grossly interfering in China's internal affairs."
Lin reinforced Beijing's defiant stance, stating: "China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes it."
The sharp rhetorical exchange erupted after foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the US, and the EU convened in Ontario and jointly condemned Beijing's military posturing. On Wednesday, these diplomats had issued warnings regarding China's "rapid increase" in its nuclear arsenal and accelerating military capabilities.
In their coordinated statement, the G7 delegation called on China to "demonstrate its commitment to stability through improved transparency." The joint document emphasized: "We reaffirmed the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law," while simultaneously registering "strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in particular by force or coercion, including in the East China Sea and the South China Sea."
The multilateral group specifically flagged cross-strait tensions, stressing "the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait" and opposing "any unilateral attempts to change the status quo, particularly by force or coercion." They additionally championed "Taiwan's meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations" and advocated for "peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues through constructive dialogue."
Turning to the Ukraine conflict, Lin rejected Western allegations of Chinese complicity, asserting that Beijing has been "open and aboveboard regarding" the crisis. He underscored that the country has "never provided lethal weapons to any party in the conflict, strictly controls dual-use items, and will never accept the G7's attempts to shift blame or label China."
The spokesperson concluded with a categorical assertion on sovereignty, emphasizing: "The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair for China, and how it is resolved is a matter for the Chinese people alone, brooking no external interference."
The confrontation caps a two-day diplomatic summit involving the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU's chief diplomat.
