Syrian Flag Hoisted Over London Embassy for First Time Since 2013
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, visiting the UK for official talks, oversaw the ceremony at the central London building.
The embassy had remained shuttered for more than a decade after the UK cut diplomatic ties with Damascus amid the ongoing Syrian conflict.
In a post on the US social media platform X, Sheybani framed the event as emblematic of a turning point for Syria, stating the reopening came “after years of isolation imposed by Assad’s chemical regime.”
He added: “Syria is returning to the world with its free identity.”
The UK government has yet to issue a public response regarding the ceremony or its potential impact on bilateral relations.
The flag raising is the latest visible sign of Syria’s attempts to reestablish its diplomatic presence internationally after years of isolation.
Witnessing the ceremony, Sammy told media: “I’m very happy. I was born here, but I visited Syria for the first time a few months ago. Thank God for today.”
Ramsa, holding a scarf featuring the Syrian flag, said: “The Syrian people have been waiting for this moment for a very long time. I can’t find words to say. I’m very happy.”
