Hundreds of U.S. National Guard Members Recalled to Their Home States

(MENAFN) Hundreds of National Guard personnel dispatched to Portland, Oregon, and Chicago, Illinois, amid demonstrations against the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies are now being recalled to their originating states, a defense source confirmed.

A US Defense Department official disclosed to media Saturday that approximately 200 federalized California National Guard troops stationed in Portland and another 200 from the Texas National Guard deployed to Chicago last month will all be withdrawn.

The White House had defended these missions as essential to "protect federal assets and personnel," with President Donald Trump activating Title 10 authority—which permits military deployment when the president determines "there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the government of the United States."

Federal judicial bodies have consistently prevented the administration from positioning forces on municipal streets following legal challenges brought by local and state authorities. Friday saw the administration petition the Supreme Court to reverse a permanent injunction blocking National Guard troop placement in Portland.

The defense source revealed that federalized Oregon Guard personnel will be reduced from 200 to 100 soldiers, while roughly 300 Illinois Guard members will stay under federal command.

This strategic adjustment follows Friday's announcement from US Northern Command, stating the Department of War—the Trump administration's preferred designation for the Defense Department—would "be shifting and/or rightsizing our Title 10 footprint in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to ensure a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city."

Portland and Chicago have experienced prolonged protests outside US Immigration and Customs Enforcement compounds, with Trump's decision to deploy federal forces triggering fierce opposition from municipal and state officials who contend these measures needlessly inflame existing tensions.

The president has additionally authorized National Guard mobilizations to Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Memphis, citing criminal activity and the imperative to protect federal installations.
