US launches retaliatory operation in Syria after Dec. 13 attack

(MENAFN) The United States has initiated a military campaign in Syria in response to a fatal attack on American troops earlier this month near Palmyra, according to official statements released on Friday.

The operation, named Operation Hawkeye Strike, was launched after an assault on Dec. 13 that targeted US personnel stationed in eastern Syria. Announcing the move, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on social media that American forces had begun striking Daesh positions across the country. “Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced Operation Hawkeye Strike in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites,” he said.

He described the mission as a direct act of retaliation rather than the start of a broader conflict.

“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance,” Hegseth said, stressing that the United States “will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.”

According to his remarks, the operation has already resulted in multiple militants being tracked down and killed, with further actions expected. He issued a stark warning to anyone considering attacks on US interests, saying, “If you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

No specific information has been released regarding the precise locations hit, the number of casualties, or other operational details related to the strikes.

The attack that prompted the operation was carried out earlier this month by members of the Daesh terror group in central Syria and resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and one civilian, as stated by reports.
