India, Canada Launch Defense Dialogue

(MENAFN) India and Canada on Monday launched a defense dialogue and signed agreements covering areas such as uranium supply and critical minerals, following bilateral talks in New Delhi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, resulting in 25 outcomes, including the institutionalization of the India–Canada defense dialogue. The dialogue aims to exchange views on defense policies, regional and global security, and strategic developments to explore closer defense cooperation.

The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation on security and law enforcement, addressing issues such as illegal drug flows, particularly fentanyl precursors, and transnational organized crime. Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to combating transnational repression.

A long-term contract was signed for the supply of uranium ore concentrates, described by India’s External Affairs Ministry as a “major step toward expanding nuclear energy in India.” An MoU on cooperation in critical minerals was also signed.

Additionally, both sides set a goal to double bilateral trade in goods and services to $50 billion by 2030. Current total bilateral trade between India and Canada stood at $8.98 billion in 2024, with diplomatic relations established in 1947.
