Melania Trump Leads UN Discussion on Protecting Children in War Zones

(MENAFN) First Lady Melania Trump presided over a United Nations Security Council session on children and education in conflict in New York on Monday, as US military operations continue in Iran.

Her remarks focused on the importance of education for children in “advancing tolerance and world peace.” This marked the first time a world leader’s spouse has chaired such a meeting, which she did on behalf of the United States during its rotating presidency of the UN council this month.

Trump also offered condolences to families of US service members who have died, though she did not mention any specific military operation. “Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered,” she said.

She added: “I extend my earnest wishes for a swift and smooth recovery to all those who have been injured. You are in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times.”

Advocating for children in her official role, the First Lady said: “The US stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours.”

UN Under-Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo highlighted the vulnerability of children in conflict zones, saying, “When conflicts erupt, children are among those most severely affected.”

She noted that “we have been reminded of this truth over the last two days,” pointing out that schools in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman have closed or moved to remote learning due to ongoing military operations in the region.
