UK Dismisses Russia's Intelligence Activities Claims as 'Nonsense'
A Foreign Office spokesman fired back at the expulsion, telling media: "Russia has pursued an increasingly aggressive and co-ordinated campaign of harassment against British diplomats, pumping out malicious and completely baseless accusations about their work," dismissing the Russian allegations as "complete nonsense."
The spokesman doubled down in a second statement, warning: "The UK does not stand for intimidation of British embassy staff and their families."
Russia's Federal Security Service, the FSB, announced Monday that it had revoked the accreditation of Jance Gerardus, second secretary at the British Embassy in Moscow, ordering him to leave Russian territory within two weeks.
The FSB leveled sweeping charges against Gerardus, alleging that he "deliberately provided false information" upon entering the country and "was conducting intelligence and subversive activities" that posed a direct threat to Russia's national security.
London has offered no confirmation of the intelligence allegations, and the sharp exchange marks yet another deterioration in UK-Russia relations — a diplomatic relationship that has remained deeply strained since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
