US-Israel Conflict with Iran Threatens Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Global Trade
The strait, located between Yemen and Djibouti, is the only direct maritime route linking Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal. At its narrowest, it spans roughly 32 kilometers (17 nautical miles).
Iranian military sources warned that any attempts by the US to address issues at the Strait of Hormuz with “stupid measures” could add further complications, emphasizing that "the Bab al-Mandab Strait is considered one of the world’s strategic straits, and Iran has both the will and the ability to create a completely credible threat against it."
The strait handled about 12% of global oil shipments in early 2023, with flows averaging roughly 4.2 million barrels per day in early 2025. Any disruption could force maritime traffic between Europe and Asia to reroute around Africa, dramatically increasing transit times and costs.
Its strategic value has led global powers, including the United States, France, and China, to establish military bases in the region, underscoring its critical role in international commerce.
