Algeria Announces Date for Legislative Elections

(MENAFN) Algeria will hold its next legislative elections on July 2, the National Independent Election Authority confirmed Monday, releasing the official rules governing candidate lists.

The authority outlined strict eligibility criteria for candidates, noting that “at least one-third of candidates must be women, half must be under 40 years of age, and one-third must hold a university degree.”

It also specified that each candidate list must include more names than the number of seats in the constituency—by seven when the seat count is odd, and by six when it is even.

Political parties that “failed to secure more than 4 percent of votes in the last legislative elections, or lack at least 10 elected representatives in the constituency, must gather 150 voter signatures per seat,” the authority added.

Independent candidates are subject to the same signature threshold, while party lists representing Algerians abroad must collect 100 signatures per seat.
