Peru Holds Presidential Election Amid Record Number of Candidates
According to reports, the race has seen a tight contest among three main contenders, each representing different parts of the political spectrum. However, none of them are likely to secure an outright win, as under Peruvian law, a candidate must receive over 50% of the vote in the first round to be declared the winner.
Leading the charge is Keiko Fujimori, the candidate from Fuerza Popular and the daughter of the late former president Alberto Fujimori. With a strong base of far-right support, she is running for the presidency for the fourth time. Alongside her, Rafael Lopez Aliaga of Renovacion Popular, a conservative and former mayor of Lima, is vying for the top office after stepping down from his mayoral position to pursue his second presidential bid.
Additionally, Ricardo Belmont, an 80-year-old media mogul and former mayor, has emerged as a strong anti-establishment figure. He has gained significant traction among voters, particularly due to his outspoken response to the recent political turmoil in the country.
Given the fragmented nature of the vote, many analysts predict that the top two candidates will face off in a decisive second-round election on June 7.
Aside from the presidential race, Peruvians are also electing a new legislative body, which marks a significant shift as the country moves back to a bicameral system for the first time in more than 30 years.
