Israel Pushes Back on Ukraine’s Claims Over Grain Shipments
The dispute began when Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Israel over what he described as involvement in trade involving grain taken from territories under Russian control. He also referenced reports about a cargo vessel carrying grain from those regions heading toward the Israeli port of Haifa, and said Ukraine had raised the issue formally with Israeli diplomatic representatives.
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar pushed back against the claims, stating that diplomatic communication should not take place through public posts or media statements. He stressed that accusations alone do not constitute proof and noted that no formal legal request or supporting evidence had been submitted before the matter was raised publicly.
Sa’ar added that Israeli authorities would review the issue, but reiterated that proper diplomatic channels must be used for such disputes.
The exchange comes amid already strained relations between the two countries. Ukrainian officials have criticized Israel for not adopting sanctions against Russia or severing ties since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.
According to reports citing Ukrainian diplomatic sources, Kyiv has warned that it may consider broader diplomatic and legal responses if ships linked to the disputed grain shipments are allowed to dock in Israeli ports.
Ukraine considers several territories, including Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, to be under occupation, while Russia maintains that these regions became part of its territory following referendums held in 2022 and insists that any long-term peace agreement must reflect those territorial changes.
