Israel Releases Two Gaza-Bound Flotilla Activists After Detention

(MENAFN) Two activists involved in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla have been released by Israeli authorities after an extended period of detention and subsequently deported, according to official statements.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said on social media that Brazilian activist Thiago de Avila and Spanish activist Saif Abukeshek were freed after the completion of investigations. Their detention had reportedly been extended on two separate occasions by judicial authorities before the decision to release them.

The pair were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a maritime initiative carrying humanitarian aid intended for Gaza. The flotilla reportedly came under attack near the Greek island of Crete while still hundreds of nautical miles from its destination.

The aid convoy had departed from European ports in mid-April, with the stated aim of delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza and challenging long-standing restrictions on maritime access to the territory.

The broader context involves the ongoing blockade of Gaza, which has been in place for years and has significantly restricted movement of goods and people. The situation has drawn continued international attention amid humanitarian concerns.

The release of the activists comes amid sustained regional tensions and ongoing international debate over access to humanitarian aid for Gaza.
