Erdogan Warns Against Expansion of US-Iran Tensions Across Region

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that Türkiye does not want the confrontation between the United States and Iran to widen further across the Middle East.

The remarks came during Erdogan’s meeting in Istanbul with Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government, according to official statements.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on recent developments in the region and the growing security concerns linked to the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Erdogan voiced concern over attacks targeting Iraqi territory, including incidents reported in Erbil, and stressed that Ankara opposes any escalation that could draw additional countries into the conflict.

He also stated that Türkiye would maintain its support and solidarity with the Kurdistan Regional Government during the current period of instability.

The Turkish leader emphasized that preserving stability in Iraq remains crucial for the wider region, adding that the rapid formation of Iraq’s central government would contribute to national unity and political cohesion.

Erdogan further reaffirmed Türkiye’s intention to deepen cooperation with both Baghdad and the KRG in several sectors, including transportation, trade and energy.

He also said the Development Road Project would create significant advantages not only for Iraq but for Gulf states as well.

In addition, Erdogan repeated Türkiye’s commitment to completing its “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative, underscoring Ankara’s broader objective of promoting peace and stability both inside the country and throughout the region.
