U.S. Drops Albanese Sanctions After Judge's Ruling

(MENAFN) The US Treasury Department has delisted UN Special Rapporteur for Palestinian Human Rights Francesca Albanese from its Specially Designated Nationals list, according to the agency's website Wednesday — a reversal that follows a federal court's decision to block the Trump administration's punitive measures against her.

US District Judge Richard Leon last week granted a preliminary injunction halting the sanctions, ruling that the administration had sought to penalise Albanese based on the "idea or message expressed" — a violation of her First Amendment protections.

Albanese, an Italian national residing in Tunisia, was originally sanctioned after she urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to pursue war crimes charges against Israeli officials over military conduct in Gaza.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had accused Albanese of orchestrating a "campaign of political and economic warfare" against both the US and Israel, citing a report she authored identifying corporations allegedly complicit in Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories — among them Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Palantir.

Albanese has held her post as the UN Human Rights Council's special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza since 2022, tasked with documenting human rights violations against Palestinians. Under the now-lifted sanctions, she had been barred from entering the US, frozen out of American banking and payment infrastructure, and prohibited from conducting business with any US-based individuals or entities.

The legal challenge was initiated in February by Albanese's husband, World Bank economist Massimiliano Cali, and the couple's US citizen daughter.
