DR Congo Court Issues Death Sentences Over Killing of UN Experts
The case relates to the deaths of UN investigators, including American Michael Sharp and Swedish national Zaida Catalan, who were working in Kasai Central province to examine violence linked to unrest involving the Kamwina Nsapu militia.
Those convicted include figures identified as leaders of the Kamuina Nsapu militia as well as Colonel Jean de Dieu Mambweni of the Congolese armed forces.
The court ruled that all 54 were guilty of war crimes in connection with the killings of the UN experts.
Mambweni had previously received a 10-year prison sentence in an earlier 2022 trial and was accused of supplying ammunition that may have been used in the attack on the investigators.
