Former Nigerian General Dies After Abduction in Northwest Kidnapping Case

(MENAFN) A retired Nigerian army general who was seized by armed men in the country’s northwest has died while still in captivity, according to military authorities.

Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who previously served as military spokesperson between 2015 and 2017, was kidnapped last month alongside his wife while they were traveling through Katsina state.

No armed group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.

According to reports, the incident reflects the ongoing insecurity in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where criminal gangs locally referred to as “bandits” regularly carry out kidnappings for ransom, as well as cattle theft and assaults on rural villages. The region has also seen activity from militant jihadist groups, with an alleged militant base in Sokoto state previously targeted in a US airstrike on 25 December last year.

Katsina state has remained one of the areas most heavily impacted by this wave of violence.

Reports indicate that the retired officer was on his way to attend a wedding on 30 May when his vehicle was ambushed by armed attackers, who abducted him, his wife, and their driver.

Days before confirmation of his death, footage circulated online that appeared to show him being held captive, reportedly displaying an injury to his left leg while sitting alongside his wife and other hostages.
