Ebola Cases, Deaths Fall in Congo as Transmission Remains High—WHO
Janet Diaz, head of the Safe Scalable Care unit within the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, told journalists in Geneva that the number of new cases decreased by 20.3%, while deaths fell by 24.2% across the latest two 14-day periods.
WHO data showed that by Sept. 26, the country had recorded 8,067 confirmed Ebola cases, including 3,901 deaths and 2,070 recoveries.
The outbreak has affected 63 health zones across seven provinces: Haut-Uele, Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, Tshopo, Bas-Uele and Sud-Ubangi.
Diaz said infections in Ituri have continued to “gradually decline” since reaching their highest level in mid-August. However, she noted that transmission remains elevated, with Mandima, Nia Nia and Mongbwalu among the areas experiencing deteriorating trends.
“Early access to care can significantly improve chances of survival,” Diaz said.
She nevertheless warned that a significant number of patients continue to die at home or within their communities because they do not reach medical facilities quickly enough.
